Clearwater Florida Resorts.....A Whole Lot Of Fun!Yes - they're up there with the very best in quality. But Clearwater Florida Resorts have to also be up there in the very top rankings for breathtaking locations and family vacation resorts. And everyone knows those beaches....are...well..just plain amazing. And truly Sun-soaked! When I consider spending my dollars on resort vacations, this Gulf Coast jewel steps up to the mark in so many ways. Clearwater is breathtaking. It's exciting. It's relaxing. It's exhilharating. At just minutes from both Tampa and St Petersburg International Airports, Clearwater meets one of my top requirements - to be able to be in my flip-flops and on the balcony, sipping a cold drink within two hours max of touchdown! A Little History....Historically Clearwater was populated by indigionous people known as the Tocobaga. No - I haven't mispelt it! Tocobaga. Tuck that one away for your next quiz!The modern origins though lie around the setting up of Fort Harrison, which in 1835 was a response to the "Seminole Wars" of that era. The part of Clearwater that accommodated teh Fort is now Harbor Oaks which has a great view of... yes... the harbor. Clearwater really grew from 1842 onwards with settlers taking up an offer from the Government to encourage cultivation of the land and bear arms in the State. In actual fact, the town was known as Clear Water Harbor up to 1906 - this being largely due to a spring originating from around where the City Hall is nowadays. ( This whole area is well known for its freshwater springs.) Troops heading for Europe and the Pacific during WW2 trained in Clearwater with many of the top hotels being used as barracks. Sand Key used to be known as Dan's Island and curiously was used as a training target for US Fighters and bombers. This fantastic resort is on 10 acres of white Florida beach and the rooms are just the way Hilton rooms need to be. It's close by Pier 60 with great views of the Marina. Right near the top of my list is Sheraton Sand Key Resort Believe me - this is a nature lover's paradise. If you want to get away from the beach - one way to experience nature in all of its bounty is to go Deep Sea Fishing On A Chartered Dive-Boat.
